Contains photographs of the following military unit and organization: American Graves Registration Office, China Zone; 121st Evacuation Hospital. General description of the collection: The Eli B. Pope photograph collection consists of snapshots and official images collected by Specialist First Class (SFC) Eli B. Pope primarily during his service in the Far East from 1946 to 1957. Most of the images relate to his involvement with the recovery of American remains (including some from aircraft wrecks) with the American Graves Registration Service, China Zone. There are several snapshots relating to the recovery of a 5th Marine Engineer Battalion casualty, John B. Babich, on Iwo Jima in 1948. There is a series of snapshots of General George C. Marshall being welcomed by Chinese Communist leaders (including Chou En-Lai, Mao Tse-Tung, and Lin Piao) in Peking in 1946. There are images documenting several recovery expeditions searching for American military remains in the China Zone from 1946 to 1948. Pope also became involved with orphans. There are images of Pope and other American personnel with Japanese orphans in Tokyo (1947 and 1953) and at the Seiko-Ryo Salvation Army Girls Home, Tokyo (May and September 1957). There are several images of Japanese orphans "adopted" by the members of the 121st Evacuation Hospital, Tokyo, in 1953 and a farewell party for the unit in 1957. There are similar images of Pope and other personnel with Korean orphans at Pusan in 1951.
